Children’s health sign-ups scheduled
SCRANTON — State Rep. Frank Andrews Shimkus, D-South Abington Township, will co-host a sign-up day for the Children’s Health Insurance Program at the Maternal and Family Health Services Office on Thursday.
“CHIP can help working parents who can’t get or afford health insurance for their children,” Mr. Shimkus said. “We will have representatives from CHIP on hand to answer parents’ questions and to help sign their children up for this important insurance program.”
All Pennsylvania children up to age 19 are eligible for CHIP, either free or at a substantially reduced price, based on a family’s household income. CHIP covers doctor’s visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, vision, dental and home health care, as well as mental health and substance-abuse services. The program even covers children who are unable to obtain coverage due to pre-existing conditions.
CHIP is funded by the state cigarette tax and federal money.
For more information, contact Mr. Shimkus’ constituent service office in Scranton at 342-4353. The sign-ups will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Maternal and Family Health Services, 315 Colfax Ave., Mr. Shimkus said.

Harrison Avenue span down to one lane
DUNMORE — The state Department of Transportation will implement a single-lane restriction by midweek as preliminary repairs begin on the Harrison Avenue Bridge.
When repairs begin, traffic will be restricted to one lane inbound.
The bridge, between South Scranton and the Hill Section, was most recently inspected in May, when PennDOT engineers determined the bridge should be restricted until repairs can be made. They also restricted the 72-year-old bridge to a 25-ton weight limit.
Repairs will include placing temporary supports under the bridge deck, replacing eight support columns, deck repairs and sealing of deck joints. The weight restrictions will remain in place until the work is completed.
The northbound (inbound) lane will remain open during the repairs. The recommended southbound (outgoing) detour will be Mulberry Street to Jefferson Avenue, to Spruce Street, to Moosic Street.
The Harrison Avenue Bridge was built in 1935 and has an average daily traffic volume of more than 17,000 vehicles.
