A glass of cool fruit juice is not just the most refreshing way to beat the heat and cleanse your system. New research suggests that it can even help prevent Alzheimer’s. A recent study by the American Journal of Medicine said drinking fruit or vegetable juice considerably reduces a person’s chances of developing Alzheimer’s. The reason, scientists say, lies in the link between the free radicals in the body and early damage to the brain cells in people who ultimately develop this disease. Fruit and vegetable juice have antioxidant properties that help protect the body from the free radicals — and hence stop degeneration of the brain,” says Dr Sakshi Chawla. Juices can also be your shield against heart disease. “Fruit and vegetable juice is also high in potassium, which helps in prevent blood clots. So it also helps protect you against cardiovascular diseases.”
Vegetable juice is also a good source of enzymes, which are lost when you cook the veggies. The juices are good sources of vitamins and minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium, copper and iodine. Carrot juice, for example, contains large quantities of Vitamin A, while citrus fruit juices are enriched with Vitamin C. Green vegetable juices also contain a lot of Vitamin E.
