Children's Toys, Jewelry Recalled Due To Lead Poisoning Hazard

Children's Toys, Jewelry Recall

Rockland County Department of Health announces that children's toys and jewelry are being recalled because they contain lead.

Toy Drums, sold at gift and collectible stores nationwide for $15 from June 2005 through April 2007, have been recalled because they contain lead paint. Eli's Small Drum measures 4 ¾ inches in diameter and 3 ½ inches tall. The Liberty Large Drum measures 6 ¾ inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. The drums are made of wood and come with two wooden drumsticks. The sides of the drums are painted blue with white stars and the tops and bottoms feature an antique U.S. flag decoration. The drums are packaged and sold separately.

The jewelry is distributed by Tween Brands, Inc. of Albany, Ohio and sold at Limited Too and Justice retail stores nationwide. Some of the recalled necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and charms are metallic, multi-colored, and have "High School Musical" or pictures of "High School Musical" actors printed on them. Others have frogs, hearts, stars, dogs with dog bones, flowers, and monkeys that hang from silver, black or brown chains or cords.

"Lead is toxic and a health risk to young children who have a tendency to put things in their mouths," said Commissioner of Health, Dr. Joan Facelle.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in cooperation with the Boyds Collection Ltd and Tween Brands Inc are voluntarily recalling these drums. These products should be taken away from children and returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Tween Brands is also giving a coupon for a 15-percent discount off a future purchase.

"As an overall prevention strategy to protect children from lead poisoning, children should have their blood lead levels checked by their pediatricians at ages one and two," said Dr. Facelle.
