Fire safety and burn prevention educational programme has targeted thousands of children in schools and community groups, focusing on reducing the numbers of children injured with fire and hot liquids.
The Children's Fire & Burn Trust (CFBT), a registered charity, have been working in partnership with the paediatric burns unit at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and East and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Services since 2001.
Statistics demonstrate that many children under 5 years old are scalded with hot bath water, tea and coffee – this year in Child Safety Week (18 – 23 June), CFBT has been working with QVH and the Fire & Rescue Services to produce an educational pack to take the messages about the dangers of hot liquids into the community, through contact with nurseries, mother and toddler groups and playgroups.
"The education of the parents and carers of these young children is vital in being able to help in the reduction of such injuries, as the majority of accidents happen in the home. We must all work together to make a difference to these statistics" said Liz Turnbull, Community Education Officer for the Children's Fire & Burn Trust.
